Sleep Apnea Treatment

Choosing the Right Sleep Apnea Mask
Written by Fred McConnell
There are many ways to treat sleep apnea disorder, amongst which Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most effective for an obstructive sleep apnea. The treatment is achieved by using CPAP machines with a small device that is worn by the patient and it blows air into the mask. The air helps in keeping the airways open as well as alleviates the symptoms of the condition.

Most of the patients don't follow the machine treatment because they are not comfortable with the sleep apnea CPAP masks. It should be comfortable to wear. There are a few things you should keep in mind while choosing a mask to get more benefits.

The very first thing you should find out is if you breathe through your mouth or nose during sleep. Nose breathers can get a smaller mask that will fit over their nose and this is more comfortable. In case you breathe through the mouth, get a mask that will cover both the nose and the mouth. You can also use a chinstrap for keeping the mouth closed during sleep and then use a nose mask.

Most of the masks have a harder body and a softer silicone part, which touches the face of the wearer. It is important to find a mask of your face size that fits better to the face. There is no chance of air leakage if the mask fits well and you will also find it comfortable.

The hose to the mask is another important thing to keep in mind while purchasing sleep apnea machines. You can extend the hose as per your freedom of movement, but do remember that greater pressure gets generated if the hose is longer and it makes the machine exert more to ensure that you are receiving the correct pressure on the mask. If the hose is getting in the way, put it over the headboard. You can also fix a custom made hook to hold the hose on the wall.

There are different types of sleep apnea CPAP masks available in the market to cater to the individual needs of patients. Let's have a look at them:

Nasal Pillow Mask with Side Straps

This type of mask has nasal pillows placed beneath the nostrils for delivering constant and a steady air pressure. The whole mask is kept in place because of the side straps.

Because of its open design, it is ideal for those who are scared of using big masks. The main problem with a full-face mask is that wearer finds it difficult to have full field vision while watching TV or reading books. The nasal pillow mask looks like scuba diving equipment that has enough space for wearing eyeglasses for reading or TV viewing purpose.

Nasal Pillow Mask with Ball Cap Straps

The mask resembles a ball cap and does not cover the whole face. You can have a little problem in reading after putting on the mask. It is ideal for a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper because it does not have a side strap. For more comfort, you can also purchase a sleep apnea nasal pillow interface with the mask.

Nasal Mask with Face Suctions and Side Straps

It is one of the best and most secured sleep apnea headgear or masks. It covers the entire nose and delivers a steady air pressure required for the treatment of the disorder. The side straps of the mask situated at the forehead and mouth helps in keeping it in place.

If you are a restless sleeper, then the nasal mask with face suctions and side straps is the best for you. Its secure suction action and double side straps will keep the mask in place even when you change positions.

The mask is also ideal for people whose air pressure has to be maintained at a high level. Its suction will keep the air inside to prevent you from having a dry mouth, skin irritation, stuffy nose, teary eyes and other side effects.

Full Face Sleep Apnea Masks with Side Straps

Although, the mask is most secure but it is big and can be difficult to adjust. The mask covers the entire mouth and nose with side straps on the forehead and mouth levels. But, the mask has many benefits like easy breathing through the nose, relief from muscle and lung problems and a better attachment to head area.

If you are the one who just can't stand a bulky mask while sleeping, you should prefer the nasal pillows option. Many people prefer to use this mask as the air leakage problem gets lesser and no irritation is caused on the skin because of its smaller size.

Always remember that a correctly fitted mask can make a big difference in your treatment. You might feel benefited or cheated by selecting a mask. Take your time in finding the best option to meet your particular requirements.
